Everyone loves the excitement of getting ready for Christmas and at Seymour House we have a whole host of fun festive activities for the children to begin their celebration of Christmas at nursery.

Christmas is a magical time, especially for children, so Christmas at our nurseries is a time for us to get creative with all kinds of seasonal activities, making wonderful memories for our little ones and their families. From Christmas baking and Christmas songs to decoration making and themed games, everyone enjoys the lead up to Christmas at our nurseries. Here are some of the brilliant festive activities and traditions our staff and children get involved in.

The nursery Christmas post box

Posting Christmas cards in our very own nursery post box always brings a flurry of excitement! The children can post Christmas cards to their friends and each day a special helper is chosen to deliver the cards around the nursery.

Decorating the nursery Christmas tree

Every year, one of the most special events of Christmas at nursery is decorating the tree. The children spend time making ornaments to hang on the tree ready for the sparkly Christmas lights switch on.

Making Christmas wreaths and collages

We are always encouraging the children to use sensory exploration which, combined with their imagination and creativity results in some fantastic Christmas wreaths using twigs, leaves and other things from nature. We also inspire them to make Christmas collages using recycled materials to make a truly original, and sustainable, work of art!

Christmas baking

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without some festive tasty treats! We have lots of opportunities for the children to have fun measuring, mixing and baking anything from Christmas tree flat bread to snowman cookies.

Christmas songs and rhyme time

Singing makes everyone happy and teaching the children Christmas tunes that they will likely sing every year that follows is an amazing experience for all of us. We use Makaton as part of our Christmas song and rhyme time, so it’s a fun learning experience for everyone whilst enjoying festive songs and spreading Christmas cheer!

Christmas games

The older children at our nurseries always enjoy playing our game, Guess the Gift. We wrap up different objects from around the room and encourage them to use their critical thinking skills to guess what’sinside. To make it even more exciting, our elves may leave a few clues around to help the children with problem solving.

Time outside is an important part of our day and at Christmas we incorporate exciting festive games into outdoor time. One game the children love to play outside is Follow the Star. Stars with a hidden Christmas themed task are hidden around the outdoor classroom. When they find a star, they must complete the activity which can be anything from star jumps to flying around like an angel, singing a Christmas carol or sharing a kind word about someone special.

Winter Wonderland – frozen fun

Our Winter Wonderland experience is a day of wintry festiveness. Our fun-filled list of activities includes frosty art with winter-themed painting, ice-themed games such as freeing animals from ice blocks and enjoying a dance off with a Christmas freeze dance. When the music stops, the children freeze in fun poses – just like snowmen! To end the day, our cosy dens are transformed into an igloo, where the children snuggle up and enjoy wintry stories together.

A tasty Christmas lunch

Serving up a delicious Nursery Kitchen Christmas lunch  is a tradition for everyone at Seymour House nurseries. All the children get involved making festive decorations and Christmas crackers for the table. Inside each of our crackers we include quotes that reflect our values and funny festive jokes to enjoy – a wonderful way to build memories together.

The Night Before Christmas pyjama day

For their last day of Christmas at nursery, on Christmas Eve the children come dressed in their cosiest pyjamas for a wonderful Night Before Christmas celebration. We gather to share stories before the big day arrives, igniting that magical Christmas Eve anticipation!

Spreading Christmas cheer

For us, this time of year is not only about how we celebrate Christmas at nursery. In the true spirit of Christmas, we also think about the wider community and our staff and families come together to support our charity partner, Home-Start Essex. We have a fundraising Christmas Jumper Day and we help spread some holiday cheer by donating toys, books, clothes and gifts to brighten up Christmas for many local families in need.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

As the children enjoy Christmas at nursery, we would also like to wish everyone a happy Christmas full of fun and special family time making memories together.
